Intelligence: What We Are, and What We Are Not

May 09, 2025 by Gonnie Been

Data is the raw material of this age—
like iron ore from deep earth,
waiting to be shaped.

It becomes information when arranged—
made legible through structure and signal.
Knowledge arises when that information finds context,
when it’s absorbed by a mind that remembers and reflects.
And wisdom…

Wisdom begins to emerge when knowledge meets time,
meets life—
and opens into something more
than what we can explain.

This arc—from data to wisdom—is the unfolding of intelligence.
Not speed,
but depth.
Not access,
but presence.
Not knowing more,
but remembering what it means to be whole.

Artificial Intelligence processes data.
It imitates fluency,
mimics knowledge,
responds at speed.
But it does not pause.
It does not feel the weight of a decision.
It does not carry consequence,
or know the cost of care.

It is not intelligent in the way forests are,
or rivers,
or a bird that flies without thought.

Because true intelligence is not simply knowledge applied.
It is not earned, taught, or stored.
It is the movement of something older—
an original, ancestral, and innate current
flowing through the centre of our being.
It becomes available only when we are quiet enough to receive it—
when thoughts are silent,
the heart in peace,
and both integrated in the body—
the body that is present.

This intelligence does not arrive with certainty.
It comes in fragments,
in moments of clarity between the worldly noise,
in the sensing that arises before understanding.

We are not machines.
We are shaped by experience,
by memory, by meaning.
Guided not just by what we know,
but by our dreams.
Not designed to optimise,
but to live in relationship—
with ourselves,
with one another,
and with life.

And when we are present—
when mind, heart, and body are in silent conversation—
then another kind of intelligence becomes available.
Not artificial, but alive.
Not constructed, but received.
Not ours to control,
but ours to be guided by.

An Invitation

In an age of unrelenting intelligence,
what kind do you wish to cultivate?

The kind that calculates,
or the kind that listens?
The kind that performs,
or the kind that remembers?

Come walk the slower path.
Where intelligence becomes wisdom,
and presence creates clarity.
Where we grow not by thinking more,
but by living fully, presently, and as a whole human being.
